Under a senior designer

Mindwave builds digital products and services with a positive impact on people. The brief was to research and design an app helping people track and manage their mental health.

People living with a mental-health condition needed a simple way to track and manage how they are doing, and the NHS doctors caring for them needed better visibility between appointments.

  • My first role as a UX/UI designer, working under a senior designer.
  • A sensitive subject demanding a research-first approach.
  • Two user groups to serve: NHS patients and their doctors.
  • A responsive web app, with the mobile experience prototyped end to end.

Ran in-depth user interviews with people living with a mental-health condition, designed surveys to capture demographics, and conducted market research to understand the subject matter.

  • Research had to translate directly into meaningful, buildable features.
  • Features were shortlisted with a decision matrix before any design work.
  • Patients' and doctors' needs both had to shape the scope.
  • Sensitive users demand careful, simple UX at every step.

Created sitemaps, user flows and lo-fi wireframes on paper, then digitised the lo-fi wireframes and designed hi-fi ones in Sketch.

A responsive web app design for tracking and managing mental health, carried through to a working InVision prototype of the mobile app, with user stories and acceptance criteria written for the development team.

  • In-depth interviews and surveys completed on a sensitive subject.
  • Features shortlisted with a decision matrix.
  • Lo-fi paper wireframes taken through to hi-fi designs in Sketch.
  • A working InVision prototype of the mobile app.
  • User stories and acceptance criteria handed to the development team.
  • More designs, components and the prototype available on request.

This was my first role as a UX/UI designer. I gained solid experience in user research under a senior designer and learned to translate research into meaningful features.

I would have pushed for a round of usability testing with patients before hand-off, closing the loop between the research and the final designs.
